If you suspect you or your child might be autistic, we can offer a comprehensive autism assessment process. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:
Initial Consultation:
- You will first contact the clinic to schedule an initial consultation. This consultation typically involves a discussion with a Psychologist about your concerns and the reasons for seeking an assessment.
- The Psychologist will gather information about the individual’s developmental history, social interactions, communication skills, and repetitive behaviours.
- During this consultation, the Psychologist will explain the assessment process, answer your questions, and determine if a full autism assessment is recommended.
Assessment Process:
A full autism assessment typically involves multiple appointments and may include:
- Diagnostic Interviews: In-depth interviews are conducted with you (the individual being assessed) to understand your experiences, strengths, and challenges.
- Standardised Assessments: Clinicians may use standardised autism assessment tools, which may involve observations, questionnaires, and tasks designed to evaluate core diagnostic features of autism.
- Background Information Gathering: Information from parents, teachers, other caregivers, or partners may be obtained to gain a more comprehensive picture of the individual’s functioning in different settings.
Diagnosis and Report:
- Following the assessment, the psychologist will review the collected data and determine if an autism diagnosis is appropriate.
- If a diagnosis is made, you will receive a comprehensive written report outlining the findings and recommendations for support.
Post-Diagnosis Support:
The clinic can offer additional support services following the diagnosis, such as:
- Counselling or interventions to address specific challenges related to autism.
- Referral to other healthcare professionals or educational specialists for further support.
- Guidance on navigating resources and support groups available in Scotland.
