ADHD Assessment

We offer a comprehensive ADHD assessment process.

Here at Abercorn Clinic we can support you. If you suspect you or your child might have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

We can offer a comprehensive assessment process.

Initial Consultation

The first step is to contact the clinic to schedule an initial consultation. During this meeting, a Clinician will discuss your concerns and reasons for seeking an assessment.

  • They will gather information about the individual’s developmental history, academic performance, social interactions, attention span, and activity levels.
  • The Clinician will explain the assessment process, answer your questions, and determine if a full ADHD assessment is recommended.

Assessment Process:

A full ADHD assessment typically involves multiple appointments and may include:

  • Diagnostic Interviews: In-depth interviews are conducted with you (and potentially the individual being assessed) to understand their experiences, strengths, and challenges related to attention, focus, and hyperactivity/impulsivity.
  • Standardised Assessments: Clinicians may use standardised ADHD assessment tools, which may involve computer-based tasks, questionnaires, and rating scales completed by you, teachers, other caregivers or partners. These tools help evaluate symptoms and rule out other potential explanations for the difficulties being experienced.
  • Background Information Gathering: Information from teachers, parents, or other caregivers may be obtained to gain a more comprehensive picture of the individual’s functioning in different settings. School reports, past evaluations (if any), and medical records can also be helpful.

Clinician Expertise:

Importance of a Multidisciplinary Approach

  • While clinicians are qualified to diagnose ADHD, we may liaise with a nurse prescriber and multidisciplinary team, especially if medication management is a potential next step.
  • A multidisciplinary approach can ensure a more comprehensive assessment and offer a wider range of treatment options.

Diagnosis and Report:

  • After the assessment, the Clinician will analyse the collected data and determine if an ADHD diagnosis is appropriate. This might involve different subtypes of ADHD (inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, or combined).
  • If a diagnosis is made, you will receive a comprehensive written report outlining the findings and recommendations for support.

Post-Diagnosis Support:

The clinic may offer additional support services following the diagnosis, such as:

  • Psychotherapy or coaching to develop strategies for managing ADHD symptoms.
  • Parent training to equip parents with skills to support their child at home.
  • Referral to other healthcare professionals or educational specialists who can provide further support.
