If you suspect your child may have a learning difficulty or require additional educational support, we can offer a comprehensive educational assessment process
Initial Consultation:
- The first step is to contact the clinic to schedule an initial consultation. During this meeting,we will discuss your concerns and reasons for seeking an assessment.
- We will gather information about your child’s developmental history, academic performance, learning style, strengths and weaknesses, and any past educational evaluations.
- The Psychologist will explain the assessment process, answer your questions, and determine if a full educational assessment is recommended.
Assessment Process:
A full educational assessment typically involves multiple appointments and may include:
- Diagnostic Interviews: In-depth interviews are conducted with you and potentially your child to understand their experiences at school, learning strategies, and emotional well-being related to learning.
- Standardised Assessments: Clinicians may use standardised educational assessments, which may involve:
● Cognitive Ability Tests: These tests measure your child’s overall intellectual potential in areas like verbal reasoning, nonverbal reasoning, processing speed, and working memory.
● Academic Achievement Tests: These tests assess your child’s current level of proficiency in specific academic areas like reading, writing, and maths. - Observation: The psychologist may observe your child during specific tasks or in a classroom setting to gain insight into their learning style and potential challenges.
Collaboration with Educators:
We will often seek your permission to collaborate with your child’s teachers. This may involve:
- Teacher questionnaires or interviews: Gathering information about your child’s classroom performance, behaviour, and interactions with peers.
- Reviewing school reports and past evaluations: Obtaining a more complete picture of your child’s academic history and any previous support provided.
Diagnosis and Report:
- Following the assessment, the psychologist will analyse the collected data and determine if there is a specific learning difficulty present (e.g., dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD).
- They may also identify other factors impacting learning, such as anxiety or processing difficulties.
- If a specific learning difficulty is identified, you will receive a comprehensive written report outlining the findings, the specific diagnosis (if applicable), and recommendations for educational support.
Post-Assessment Support:
The clinic may offer additional support services following the assessment, such as:
- Recommendations for specific interventions: This could include strategies to address reading difficulties, improve maths skills, or develop organisational skills.
- Referral to educational specialists: This might involve connecting you with educational psychologists within the school system or specialist tutors equipped to provide targeted support.
- Guidance on advocating for your child’s needs: The clinic can help you understand available support options and strategies to communicate effectively with your child’s school and teachers.
