Occupational Therapy

Helps you regain or improve your ability to perform everyday activities.

In Abercorn Clinic, our Occupational Therapist (OT) can help you regain or improve your ability to perform everyday activities (occupations) that are important to you, due to illness, injury, disability, or ageing.

Assessment and Goal Setting:

  • The OT will conduct an initial assessment to understand your specific needs, challenges, and strengths. This may involve evaluating your physical abilities, cognitive skills, and daily routines.
  • They will work collaboratively with you to set realistic and meaningful goals related to your desired level of independence and participation in daily activities.

Intervention and Treatment:

Based on the assessment, the OT will develop a personalised intervention plan to help you overcome your limitations and improve your functional abilities.

This may include:

  • Adaptive techniques: Learning new ways to perform tasks, such as using adaptive equipment or modifying your environment to make everyday activities easier and safer.
  • Skill development: Working on strengthening specific skills necessary for daily living, such as dressing, bathing, cooking, or managing your medications.
  • Sensory integration: Addressing sensory processing difficulties that may be impacting your ability to participate in daily activities.
  • Vocational rehabilitation: Assisting you in returning to work or finding alternative employment options if your occupational needs have changed due to illness or injury.

Education and Support:

  • The OT will educate you on strategies and techniques to manage your condition and improve your self-care skills.
  • They may also provide support and guidance to your family members or caregivers, helping them understand your needs and assist you effectively in daily life.

Examples of how an OT can assist:

  • Personalised care: A more individualised approach, allowing the OT to focus on your specific needs and goals.
  • Collaboration with other professionals: The OT may work with psychologists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals at the clinic to provide a comprehensive approach to your care.
